US Backs Philippines Against China's Aggressive Act in South China Sea

The US Department of State has publicly declared its support for the Philippines following an incident where Chinese vessels used water cannons against Philippine boats. This confrontation occurred near Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, where the Philippine boats were resupplying the BRP Sierra Madre.

In a strong statement issued on Saturday, the US government emphasized its solidarity with the Philippines against the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) ongoing provocations in the South China Sea. The US criticized the Chinese Coast Guard's actions as not only dangerous but also a violation of international law.

Highlighting a July 2016 ruling by an international tribunal, the US reminded both the Philippines and the PRC that the tribunal had clearly stated the PRC's claims over Second Thomas Shoal were unlawful. The US urged China to adhere to the laws of the sea that allow all nations the right to free navigation.

The incident also involved a collision caused by the aggressive maneuvers of the Chinese vessels, as reported by the Philippine National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea.

Furthermore, the US Department of State reinforced the scope of the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. This treaty, they clarified, covers any armed attacks against Philippine military forces, vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea, including those belonging to the Coast Guard.

The tone of the statement was both informative and optimistic, reflecting a strong commitment to the US-Philippines alliance and the enforcement of international maritime law.
